Three and Four-Year-Old Program

Mission and Philosophy
The Shelter Island Presbyterian Church Preschool was established as a parent-cooperative program in 1978 and upholds the standards of the New York State Department of Educa-tion as a private, Pre-Kindergarten program. We are now officially known as the Shelter Island Early Childhood Learning Center (The Center).

The mission of The Center is to encourage and support the development of each child through a literacy rich classroom that is playful, environmentally safe, emotionally nurturing and intellectually stimulating. We foster an interdisciplinary approach focused on Early Literacy Skills, Social & Emotional Development, Language Development, Fine & Gross Motor Development, Creativity, Cognition, Spirituality and Math readiness.

A typical day is fun! It consists of teacher-directed lessons, center-based learning, hands-on activities, thematic crafts, story time, self-directed imaginative play, snack time, games, music, yoga, and gym room and/or playground time.

Readiness and Eligibility
To qualify, a child must be three-years old by December 1, 2017 and be able to conduct himself/herself appropriately in the school setting. Diapers/Pull-ups are allowed, although teachers encourage potty-training and nurture a child’s readiness for this developmental step. Parents are encouraged to share individual potty-training plans with teachers.
